‘Swine flu’ is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses that cause regular outbreaks in pigs. Many countries routinely vaccinate swine populations against swine influenza. Swine influenza viruses are most commonly of the H1N1 subtype, but other subtypes are also circulating in pigs (e.g., H1N2, H3N1, and H3N2)
It spreads in the same way as seasonal influenza – through direct contact (being within one meter of an infected person) or indirect contact (touching a contaminated surface). People usually get swine influenza from infected pigs, however, some human cases lack contact history with pigs or environments where pigs have been located. Human-to-human transmission has occurred in some instances but was limited to close contacts and closed groups of people.
The number of people to die of swine flu in India has risen to 36 with the first deaths in the capital, Delhi, health officials say. Two patients, a 38-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man, died in a hospital in Delhi on Thursday, officials say. Deaths have now been reported in eight Indian cities, with the death toll highest in the city of Pune. There are more than 2,400 cases of the H1N1 cases in India. Some schools have closed temporarily because of the flu. Earlier this month schools, colleges and cinemas in Mumbai were temporarily closed because of fears about the spread of flu.
The virus is thought to have killed more than 1,200 people around the world. The swine flu (H1N1) virus first emerged in Mexico in April and has since spread to many countries. Many of India's confirmed cases of swine flu have been among people who have returned from overseas travel. Passenger screening has been introduced across India's main 22 international airports.
Low immunity food items and diminishing proportions of turmeric in daily consumption especially in junk eatables, makes one more vulnerable to Swine-Flu like diseases according to ayurveda. Modern eating habits reduces our power to fight back the virus as items like Pizza and other fast foods don't contain even a pinch of turmeric and increasing intake of 'white food' is worrisome as it does not help to boost the immunity.
A new vaccine to fight the H1N1 flu virus that began sickening people around the globe past spring this year will be available in the U.S. in mid-October. Governments and health officials around the world are taking steps against the outbreak of swine flu that has killed scores of people in Mexico and spread to the U.S., Europe and possibly Asia. There are antiviral medicines one can take to prevent or treat swine flu. There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. So I would like to conclude it by
“PRECAUTION IS BETTER THAN PREVENTION”
